Chinese laser supplier Baochenxin introduced the BFSC-300-AM, a 300 W air-cooled fibre-laser source, at Formnext Asia Shenzhen. The 215 × 297 × 110 mm module is intended for compact laser powder-bed fusion machines. The announcement is not a new desktop metal printer: it is an OEM component that may reduce the space occupied by a machine's laser and cooling subsystem.

The product was shown on 26 August 2026 and described in trade reporting in September. Baochenxin says its collimating and focusing optics are integrated and factory aligned, avoiding a separate external focusing lens. Specified beam quality is M² ≤1.1 and short-term power stability is ±1%. These are supplier specifications without a published independent endurance or thermal-load test.

What is inside the BFSC-300-AM?

The module combines the laser source, part of the beam-delivery optics and air cooling in one housing. Baochenxin names stainless steel, aluminium alloys, titanium alloys and tool steel as target materials. Unlike 405 nm resin systems, this application uses a high-power infrared fibre laser to melt selected areas of a thin metal-powder layer.

The 300 W rating is source output, not guaranteed useful power at the powder bed under every condition. Scanner mirrors, protective windows, focus and contamination introduce losses. Stable part quality depends on spot size, scan speed, hatch distance, layer thickness and powder properties as well as watts.

Why air cooling matters

Industrial laser sources often use a separate water chiller, adding volume, mass, noise, energy use and maintenance points. Baochenxin claims that air cooling and integrated optics can save more than 50% of internal space compared with a conventional solution. The public material does not define the reference configuration, so this remains a manufacturer claim rather than a universal ratio.

Air cooling can increase dependence on the installation environment. The machine builder must show that fans, ducts, filters and ambient temperature keep the source inside specification throughout a build. In a machine handling fine metal powder, cooling airflow must also be separated from powder-explosion, contamination and inert-gas controls.

What is still missing from a metal printer?

A source is not an LPBF machine. The complete system still needs a sealed chamber, powder dosing and recoating, build platform, oxygen control, inert-gas circulation, scanner, optical calibration, interlocked enclosure, extraction, controls and validated process parameters. Powder recovery and sieving require a separate safety workflow. A wall outlet and the laser module are not sufficient for safe metal printing.

The distinction matters when desktop is used as a label. A compact machine may occupy less floor space while still handling a high-power laser, combustible powders and an inert atmosphere. The smaller cabinet does not eliminate installation risk. The OEM remains responsible for designing and validating the complete equipment under applicable laser, machinery, electrical and powder-handling requirements.

Questions for an OEM

Duty cycle comes before peak power. Long layers and densely packed builds can keep the source active for hours. Output, beam quality and focus must be checked as temperature rises. A short-term ±1% specification does not establish full-build drift, multi-thousand-hour life or service intervals.

Integration is the second issue. Factory-aligned optics may simplify assembly, but field calibration with the scanner and complete optical path remains necessary. Coupon density, dimensions and mechanical properties are outcomes of the whole system. A supplier sheet cannot replace material-specific parameter development and machine acceptance testing.

Editorial conclusion

Verified facts are the BFSC-300-AM trade-show launch, its 300 W rating, air cooling and published dimensions. Space, energy, noise and material-performance benefits remain manufacturer claims until comparable complete-machine tests are available. LAYERTIMES concludes that the module's value is potentially simpler OEM integration; endurance, thermal stability and validated material parameters will determine its market significance.
