Isembard opened a new global headquarters and working precision factory in Southwark, London, on 14 September. The 160,000-square-foot, four-storey site occupies a former municipal vehicle pound. It includes three- and five-axis mills, turn-mill centres, wire electrical-discharge machines and a climate-controlled metrology laboratory.

The factory makes precision components for aerospace, defence and robotics customers. Isembard names Anduril, Babcock and Tekever among them. It reported 35 staff at the location and targets 200 by the end of 2027 across production, software, manufacturing, robotics automation and support roles.

The site is not itself described as an additive factory

LAYERTIMES' earlier brief connected the Southwark opening too directly to Alloyed's metal-additive pipeline. Isembard's primary announcement names conventional precision-machining and inspection equipment at the site, but does not list an in-house metal printer fleet. 3D Printing Industry described a supply-chain link with Alloyed, while the additive capacity and exact division of work remain undisclosed.

That does not make the site irrelevant to AM. Printing is often only one operation in a metal-additive chain. Support removal, heat treatment, machining of datum surfaces and holes, wire EDM, inspection and documented release can turn a raw build into a usable component. A capable precision factory can therefore support AM without melting powder itself.

MasonOS and the network model

Isembard uses its MasonOS system for quoting, scheduling, production and quality control. The London office overlooks the factory floor, giving software and robotics teams direct visibility into operations. The company says this creates a fast feedback loop for its digital tools.

The network combines owned and franchised factories. Isembard reports growth from four sites at the start of 2026 to 16 and targets 100 UK factories by the end of 2028. These are company figures and plans. Network quality will depend on consistent machines, programmes, inspection, deviation control and operator authority across differently owned locations.

What software-led manufacturing can and cannot do

Central software can shorten quoting, coordinate capacity and create a common production record. Manufacturing knowledge cannot be reduced entirely to form fields. Workholding, tool wear, machine condition, material certificates, measurement uncertainty and operator judgement all affect the part.

Access control, export restrictions, traceability and change management are particularly important in aerospace and defence. A digital order scales safely only when drawing revision, material batch, programme version, inspection result and final release remain unambiguously connected.

Claims that require a date and scope

Isembard calls the site London's largest factory opening since the Second World War. It supplied no independent citywide factory register, so this remains a corporate claim. The reported tenfold annual revenue growth and expectation of another significant capital raise are company statements too.

The opening, floor area, listed equipment, initial staff and stated growth targets are verified through the primary announcement and independent reporting. Financial performance, network count and the 100-site plan require later reporting to assess execution.

Editorial conclusion

Southwark is notable because manufacturing software is being developed inside a working precision factory rather than as a distant digital product. For additive manufacturing, the site may primarily provide finishing, quality and supply-chain capacity. The next meaningful evidence is not nominal machine count but repeatable lead time, quality and documentation across multiple sites.
