Meshy's new Edit feature changes a selected region of a model from a text instruction while preserving the original. Users mark geometry with a lasso or brush, may add up to five reference images, and receive a new model. Each edit costs 20 credits and, according to the company, usually takes about one minute.

More local control, narrow model support

The feature currently supports high-poly models generated by Meshy 6 and 7.1, including Ultra 2K. Ultra 4K, low-poly and externally uploaded models are not supported. Textured assets switch to an untextured version for editing, so geometric and texture continuity need separate checks.

The useful change is locality: removing an accessory or changing one form no longer forces regeneration of the whole object. The result can be edited again, downloaded or sent to supported slicers. That shortens a workflow; it does not prove manufacturability.

A semantically correct model may still be unprintable

A visually convincing AI edit can contain open edges, self-intersections, zero-thickness features, floating shells, thin walls or inconsistent internal surfaces. Local regeneration may also create topological breaks at the selection boundary. Sending a file to a slicer is only data transfer; mesh repair and process checks remain the user's responsibility.

Practical checklist

Keep the original, export before and after states, then inspect watertightness, connected components, wall thickness, overhangs, supports and scale. Holes, fits and load-bearing sections in functional parts cannot be accepted from visual similarity. Figurines still need trial slicing and layer-by-layer review.

Sources and transparency

Selection strategy: the boundary is the highest-risk region Do not place the selection exactly on an edge that must remain unchanged. Leave a visually simple transition zone, then compare silhouette, connection curvature and mesh density across several results. If the edit approaches a hole, locating pin or planar datum, verify the generated result against reference CAD or measured dimensions.

Add reference images only when they resolve shape ambiguity. Different perspective, lighting or style can encourage changes in proportion and surface beyond the requested region. Change one intent at a time so both failure cause and credit cost remain traceable.

Version control and reproducibility Save the source model identifier, a screenshot of the selection, exact prompt, reference images and export settings. A later model update in a generative service may return different geometry from the same instruction. The approved STL or 3MF must therefore be an immutable manufacturing input, not a promise that a prompt can be rerun.

The 20-credit operation price is not the full work cost. Include the number of variants, mesh repair, trial slicing, physical coupon and engineering review. Manual CAD may reach a controlled result sooner for a functional part, while the generative route can be faster for organic decorative geometry.

Pre-print gate Inspect what automatic mesh repair changes. Hole filling can close an intentional opening, shell merging can remove a moving clearance and decimation can shift a mating surface. Compare the repaired model in the original coordinate system, then review every sliced layer through the edited region.

For load-bearing parts, treat an AI edit as a shape proposal. Rebuild or verify sections, fillets, holes and load paths with rule-based CAD or an engineering method. Visual similarity is neither a material property nor a safety factor.

Updated editorial conclusion Meshy Edit is useful for rapidly creating a local variant of an organic or visual model, and preservation of the original is valuable. Current support limits and the lack of a public accuracy benchmark mean it is not a precision CAD editor. A sound workflow treats the AI result as a versioned mesh, applies measurable gates and only then releases it to manufacturing.

Functions, credit cost, runtime and support limits come from Meshy's 16 October 2026 company release; VoxelMatters served as an independent topic detector. No public comparative geometry-accuracy benchmark is available.
