Cura 5.14 Beta adds painted supports and new G-code handling
The preview also adds native Windows on ARM and richer previews; production use requires a separate regression test.
UltiMaker released Cura 5.14.0 Beta on 15 October 2026. Its headline feature is support painting directly on the model: users can enforce, block or leave support generation automatic, select contiguous faces in one action and change the overhang angle interactively. The release also makes a tabbed settings panel the default, adds a native Windows on ARM build, distinguishes bridges and overhangs in preview, and moves start/end G-code template handling into CuraEngine. Because this is a beta, it should pass regression testing before it replaces any production profile.
Painted support adds control and responsibility
The painting tool exposes three decisions: where support must exist, where it must not exist and where the automatic algorithm remains in control. That is useful around holes, labels and inaccessible cavities where one global overhang angle creates too much material or puts it in the wrong place. Whole-surface selection and straight paint lines speed up authoring, but do not change physical process capability. A manually blocked area can still sag or fail between layers.
Verification must continue beyond the coloured model. After slicing, inspect the first lines that begin in air, support interface, Z gap, closed cavities and access for removal layer by layer. For a critical part, prepare automatic and painted variants from the same geometry, then compare underside finish, removal time, damage and material consumption under the same conditions.
G-code templates move into the engine
CuraEngine now processes start/end G-code formulas and variables that become known at the end of slicing. The release also adds conditional syntax, such as checking whether a material type occurs in a list. This enables stronger automation, but custom macro output may change even when visible profile values remain the same.
Before updating, retain at least one approved project and G-code file. Compare the new output with a text or purpose-built diff for heater, fan, homing, purge, tool selection and shutdown order. Cura 5.14 also lists active CuraEngine plugins in the generated file header. That improves traceability only if the manufacturing record preserves slicer version and plugin list together.
Bridges, skin and new controls
The beta assigns distinct preview colours to bridge and overhang lines, changes how small roof and floor regions are unified, and can warn when severe overhangs have no support enabled. Inner Wall Inset intentionally offsets the outermost inner wall to reduce infill marks showing through the outside. Maximum Bridge Deviation controls how far a bridge path may curve away from a straight line. These are not universal quality switches: they can alter dimensions, flow distribution and structural connection.
The fix list includes several manufacturing-relevant cases. Generic crashes on non-manifold or complex geometry are addressed; grouped 3MF models retain their Z position; first-layer temperature switches at the expected point for ZigZag patterns; and the global cooling control now governs bridge and skin processes. These are verified project changes, but UltiMaker has not published an independent regression study spanning every machine and material.
Windows on ARM and interface changes
A native Windows on ARM package can remove emulation for laptops using those processors. Availability does not establish that every Marketplace plugin, driver or network integration behaves identically. The move to Qt 6.10 also brings smaller platform-specific interface changes. Tabbed settings should make navigation easier, but migration testing should confirm that custom visible fields and established search workflows remain available.
Start with a separate user-data directory or test machine. After exporting the stable configuration, use a known simple model, a painted-support project, a multi-extruder file and a part with custom start/end G-code as a minimal regression set. Record operating system, exact Cura build, CuraEngine and active plugins, resolved settings, time and material estimates, and the result of the physical print.
Verified fact, developer claim and conclusion
The 5.14.0-beta.1 tag, 15 October GitHub release, pre-release status and itemised changelog are verified records. Claims of faster startup, more stable complex slicing and easier use remain developer statements. Without independent testing across platforms, plugins and printers, the beta cannot be described as generally faster or more reliable than the stable branch.
Our conclusion is that painted support and richer G-code metadata are meaningful workflow improvements. The risk comes from the same depth of change: toolpaths, template evaluation and project handling all move. A hobby test can roll back readily; a production environment should adopt only with versioned configuration, reference G-code and an approved physical trial.
