Entry pricing with a Formlabs-style workflow

Formlabs introduced the Form Studio 1 desktop MSLA printer on 14 October. Its $699 base price, 200 × 125 × 235 mm build volume and Alpha resins starting at $29 per litre position it below the company's established professional Form systems. Shipping is scheduled for 16 November, so no long-term field reliability evidence was available on launch day.

The headline price is not the complete system cost. A $948 bundle adds the Resin Tank Pro and Open Material Mode, while washing and UV post-curing still require equipment, solvent, workspace and labour. LAYERTIMES therefore compares finished accepted parts, not the $699 hardware label in isolation.

Technical base: MSLA, 28 LEDs and 35 micrometre pixels

The machine uses a 28-LED, 405 nm light source rated by Formlabs at 6 mW/cm² and an XY pixel pitch of 35 µm. MSLA exposes a complete layer image at once. This can be efficient for several parts of similar height, but layer count, exposure, separation, resin temperature and the tallest model jointly determine the cycle.

A 35 µm pixel grid is not the same as 35 µm part accuracy. Formlabs states XY tolerances of ±0.5% from 1–30 mm, ±0.2% from 31–80 mm and ±0.03% from 81–150 mm, with a ±0.08 mm floor. These are vendor figures for a defined process; orientation, supports, shrinkage, post-cure and measurement still affect the finished result.

Speed: the Alpha Fast ceiling is not universal

Formlabs quotes up to 130 mm/h with Alpha Fast and says most jobs finish in under two hours. Its qualification is important: the statement uses the 80th-percentile user-job height of 53 mm at 100 µm layers. It does not mean every full 235 mm build or densely populated plate completes within two hours.

The printer heats resin to 45 °C but has no mechanical mixer. That simplifies the vat, while making the specified preparation especially important for settling or filled materials. Real shift time includes filling, draining, washing, drying, post-curing, support removal and inspection.

Material system and open mode

Six Alpha materials are listed at launch, alongside Tough 1500, Flexible 80A and True Cast compatibility. The Alpha range covers general, fast, rigid, durable, castable and high-temperature uses. Names do not replace data sheets: tensile, flexural, impact, thermal and ageing data plus the precise post-cure must be matched to the load.

Open Material Mode accepts third-party 405 nm resins and allows parameter tuning. It requires manual filling, Resin Tank Pro and user validation; Formlabs does not automatically extend the same accuracy, speed or biological claims to another resin. The product page does not promise direct third-party slicer support, so openness applies to material parameters rather than the entire software chain.

Automation and limits to verify

A seven-inch touchscreen, camera, Wi-Fi, Ethernet, USB-C and automatic resin handling target convenient operation. Formlabs lists five control systems but no debris detection. Operators still need to inspect the tank after a detached print or suspected cured fragment because a following exposure could damage the film.

The standard tank is rated for more than 75,000 layers, but its film is not separately replaceable. Layer count cannot be converted into a universal number of months: geometry, separation load, material, cleaning and failures matter. Procurement should allocate tank price, stock, replacement time and failure risk to part cost.

Interpreting the GREENGUARD claim

Formlabs says Form Studio 1 is the first GREENGUARD-certified resin printer when used with the specified extractor and Alpha material. UL's GREENGUARD programme evaluates chemical emissions into indoor air against defined chamber-test limits. That is more inspectable than a generic 'low odour' claim, but it is not a universal harmlessness seal.

Certification belongs to a defined configuration: printer, material and extraction form the evaluated system. It does not prove that another resin, open mode, wash solvent, tank opening, sanding or waste handling is risk-free, and it does not replace the SDS or local risk assessment. Buyers should obtain the certificate scope and extractor installation conditions.

The boundary of the 99% savings claim

The company advertises savings of up to 99%, but its footnote says this is an internal comparison with Form 4. The percentage is neither a market average nor a result for every part. Machine, resin, tank, labour and scrap economics differ among miniatures, casting patterns and functional prototypes.

A useful pilot prints the same CAD file at least three times with fixed orientation and post-processing. Record machine and labour time, resin and supports, tank use, wash fluid, post-cure, scrap, dimensions and surface. Only then can inexpensive feedstock be distinguished from genuinely low finished-part cost.

Who may benefit?

Form Studio 1 may suit development, education and smaller workshops seeking a structured Formlabs workflow at lower entry cost without every Form 4 automation or performance feature. Open-material experimentation is an advantage, but it also transfers measurement and safety responsibility to the user.

For regulated dental, medical or other critical work, brand and pixel size are insufficient. The authorised material–printer–wash–cure combination, documentation and release process must be checked. Support for True Cast or flexible material does not itself validate the final casting or load case.

Verified facts, vendor claims and editorial assessment

The $699 list price, scheduled 16 November shipping, 200 × 125 × 235 mm volume, 35 µm pixel, Open Material Mode and configuration-bound GREENGUARD statement are verified in current product materials. The 130 mm/h maximum, majority of jobs under two hours, 75,000-layer tank life and 99% savings are vendor measurements or estimates, not independent long-term tests.

LAYERTIMES assesses that the important combination is inexpensive hardware, lower-priced house materials, an open resin mode and a documented emissions configuration—not a single record specification. After shipping, repeatability, real tank life, stable third-party parameters and whole-workshop cost will be the decisive evidence.
